PAXTON – Lyle E. Wimmergren, 76, of Village Road, and Green Valley, Arizona, died Tuesday, April 15, 2008 in UMass Memorial Healthcare, Worcester, after a brief illness.
He leaves his wife of 33 years, Marilyn R. (Snyder) Wimmergren. His son, Alan L. Wimmergren, predeceased him. He was born and raised in Beardstown, Illinois, son of Clarence C. and Edna (Lofgren) Wimmergren, and lived in Henniker, NH, and Vinalhaven, Maine before moving to Paxton three years ago.
Lyle was a US Army Veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict. In 1953 he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill, and in 1957 received an M.B.A. with Distinction from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
He retired as professor of Emeritus in the Department of Management at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1994, having taught there for 25 years. He spent a sabbatical year in 1993 working at the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development in Mesa, Arizona. Previously, he was an instructor at the University of Pennsylvania and at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. His extensive management career included: Financial Planning Supervisor at Sylvania Electric, Supervisor of Dealer Financing at Ford Motor Company, Assistant Credit Manager at Guaranty Bank and Management Trainee for the Rock Island Railroad. He was a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma and Delta Sigma Rho professional management societies, Phi Beta Kappa, Acacia Fraternity, Worcester Torch Club, the First Congregational Church of Paxton, and was a 32nd Degree Mason including the Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Moses Webster Lodge 145 in Vinalhaven, Maine.
For the past 12 years, Lyle and his wife have worked as Volunteer National Rangers through the Volunteers in Parks Program of the National Parks Service. Lyle truly enjoyed teaching southwest history and culture to park visitors. He served most recently at Tumacacori National Historic Park in Tumacacori, Arizona.
A memorial service for Mr. Wimmergren will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 18, in the First Congregational Church of Paxton.
