RUTLAND – Everett L. Willey, 76, of Rutland passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side on Sunday, November 23, 2014 after a brave battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Born in Worcester and raised in Holden, Everett was the son of Earl and Beatrice (Shipman) Willey.
He attended Wachusett Regional High School in Holden and owned and operated Suburban Crown and Bridge in Holden for 22 years. He moved to Rutland with his wife and children in 1967. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Rutland and its Prudential Committee. He also served on the Rutland Planning Board.
Everett was first and foremost an incredible family man. As a father of four daughters, he felt a fatherly obligation to teach them household repairs, painting and wallpapering, and of course the art of repairing one’s own car. He offered this loving advice with the one condition, “his way was the right way.” Raising his daughters required an outrageous sense of humor, which was tempered by the realization that he was outnumbered. Everett was proud of his wife and girls and all their accomplishments and had a quiet dignity, respecting himself the way he respected others. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, and will be remembered as a man who faithfully lived his values.
He leaves his beloved wife of 55 years, June C. (Spence) Willey; four daughters, Carol Benoit and her husband Stephen of Northborough, Donna Benoit of New Ipswich, NH, Faith Hanson of Holden and Marcia Wozniak and her husband Jeffery of Rutland; two brothers, Earl & Robert Willey, both of Florida. Three sisters, Lilla Nickerson of Florida, Grace Warpula of Leominster and Martha Bane of Alabama; 13 grandchildren, Megan, Erin, Caitlin, Matthew, Jonathan, Bradley, Regan, Christopher, Samantha, Jennifer, Robyn, Sarah, and Heather; 5 great-grandchildren; many nephews and nieces.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Everett’s family from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A funeral service honoring his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 26, at the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street, Rutland. Interment will be held privately at Rural Cemetery in Rutland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Rutland, P.O. Box 484, Rutland, MA 01543; Caring Voice Coalition, 8249 Meadowbridge Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116; or VNA Care Network and Hospice, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester, MA 01608.
