WORCESTER – Evelyn (Berman) Silver, 102, passed peacefully on Monday, February 20, 2023. Evelyn was born December 22, 1920, in Staten Island, New York. Born to Benjamin and Ida Berman she was predeceased by her husband, Sumner Silver and three siblings. Evelyn is survived by her two daughters, Alexis Silver and her husband, David Salloway of Worcester, and Elizabeth (Laurie) Bertrand of Shrewsbury; her three granddaughters, Ashley Prescott and her husband, Josh Prescott of Worcester, Nicole Bertrand of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Danielle Bertrand of Shrewsbury; and her niece Patrica Mayer and her husband, Wolfgang Mayer of Blue Ash, OH.
Evelyn was born and raised in Staten Island New York. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Economics at Brooklyn College, a Master’s Degree in Education and History at New York University and a Master’s Degree in Guidance Counseling at Hunter College New York.
Evelyn was a Social Studies teacher in New York City, then moved to being an Assistant Examiner for the New York Board of Education and then worked as an Aide to Ambassador Lawrence Steinhart. Upon his death Evelyn catalogued his papers for the Library of Congress.
Evelyn was an adjunct Professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the initial head of the WPI Student Project Center, Co-Founder and former President of the Worcester Regional Environmental Council, Co-Founder of the Greater Worcester Land Trust, Founder of the Blackstone River Watershed Association, Audubon Society Board member, Founder of the Lake Quinsigamond Watershed Association, Chairman of the Worcester League of Woman Voters Education Committee, and past President of Jewish Family Service of Worcester.
Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her daughters and granddaughters. She and Sumner were avid tennis and golf players, winters were spent skiing and summers spent on Cape Cod. Evelyn and Sumner traveled the world together. She loved feeding and watching the birds and as an older adult enjoyed taking piano lessons.
Family and friends will gather to honor and celebrate Evelyn’s truly remarkable life at a Funeral Service at 10:30 AM on Friday, February 24 at Temple Emanuel Sinai, 661 Salisbury Street, Worcester. Interment will follow at B’nai Brith Cemetery, 55 St. John’s Road, Worcester. Memorial Observance will be announced at the service. Arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home of Holden.
