Evelyn (Judkins) Congdon

RUTLAND – Evelyn (Judkins) Congdon, 92, passed away at home on Monday, February 3, 2014. Born in Acton, Evelyn was the daughter of Harold and Mary (Moulton) Judkins and lived most of her life in Rutland.

Her husband of 48 years, Chester Congdon, died in 1989. She is survived by four sons, William Congdon of Rutland, David Congdon and his wife, Carol of Rutland, Mark Moulton and his wife, Yagoda of Avon, CT and Donald Congdon and his wife, Robin of Rutland; her daughter, Lynne Kline of Worcester; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, she is predeceased by a sister, Louise Keddy.

Evelyn graduated from Rutland High School and was a licensed practical nurse (LPN). She began her career at the former Jewish Sanatorium and later worked at the former Rutland State Sanatorium before retiring in 1976 from Rutland Heights Hospital in Rutland. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Rutland.

After her retirement, Evelyn looked forward to her daily four-mile walks which she faithfully continued into her mid 70’s. She enjoyed times spent with her family such as camping and playing solitaire and double solitaire with her sons. She especially enjoyed activities that involved her grandchildren, most memorable were the sleepovers hosted at “Grammy’s house” which included games, story time and the occasional trip to Rutland State Park. She will be remembered for her compassion and care as a nurse and gentle and kind nature by all who knew her.

A memorial service honoring Evelyn’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 7, at the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main St., Rutland. Interment will be held privately at Rural Cemetery in Rutland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 484, Rutland, MA 01543.
