Eve Marion (Shimkus) Hyland

MARLBOROUGH – Eve Marion (Shimkus) Hyland, 93, of 420 Hemenway Street, formerly of Holden, died Sunday, March 6, 2005, in Marlborough Hospital.
Her husband, Maurice H. Hyland, died in 1959. She leaves her children, Carole A. (Sullivan) Santos of Hilton Head, SC, Gerald W. Hyland of Alexandria, VA, M. Theodore Hyland of Framingham and Christine M. Taylor and her husband Richard of West Boylston; 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and many cherished friends. Her daughter, Cecile H. Gelardi, died in 1996. Seven siblings, Peter, William, Frank, Daniel, Theodore and Albina Shimkus, and Cecile Daly, predeceased her. She was born in Gilbertville the daughter of Lithuania immigrants, Peter and Helen (Lapinski) Shimkus.
Mrs. Hyland was a graduate of the Salter School and worked for the New England Telephone Company in Boston for many years. While raising her family, she ran Hyland’s Pitch and Putt in Worcester with her husband, a local golf professional. She then worked several years as a medical secretary at Worcester Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1979. She lived in Marietta, Georgia, Hilton Head, South Carolina, and for the last year in the Meadows at New Horizons in Marlborough.
A funeral Mass for Mrs. Hyland will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 11, in St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, 1325 Main Stret (Rte. 122A), Holden. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nazareth Home for Boys, 77 Mulberry Street, Leicester, MA 01524. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, is directing arrangements.
