STERlING - Eunice C. (Johnson) Thompson, 78, of Princeton Rd., passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 31, 2015, under the loving care of her family and the staff at Oakdale Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in West Boylston. Born in Holden on August 6, 1936, Eunice was the daughter of Harry and Olive (Hasselstrom) Johnson and lived many years in Rutland, several years in Hubbardston before moving to Sterling in 1979.
Eunice was a member of the last class to graduate from Rutland High School in 1954. She worked several years at Holden Agway and Justice Hill Orchards in Sterling. For the last 36 years, Eunice and her husband Ronny, owned and operated Thompson Garden in Sterling. They were known for their farm grown vegetables and numerous varieties of spring bedding and hanging plants raised in their greenhouses. Eunice worked tirelessly with her husband, five daughters, and grandchildren, farming their land and tending to their greenhouses.
She loved horseback riding in her youth and fondly remembered her horse "Tarzan." She enjoyed her trips to Amish Country in Pennsylvania, and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Eunice will be remembered for her gentle, selfless and kind nature.
She leaves her beloved husband of 36 years, Ronald S. Thompson; four daughters, Linda A. Chisholm of Worcester, Debra J. Valley and her husband, James of Sterling, Carol S. Kelley and her husband, Glenn of Barre and Andrea L. Borelli and her husband, David of Petersham; three brothers, Harry C. Johnson of Rutland, Robert E. Johnson of Denton, Texas and William Johnson of Rutland; a sister, Nancy M. Graves of Barre; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Besides her parents, Eunice is predeceased by a daughter, Donna Ivaska, a brother, Roger E. Johnson and two sisters, Muriel E. Johnson and Grace Gullberg.
A funeral service honoring Eunice's life will be held privately at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., Sterling. Interment will take place in the spring at Oakhill Cemetery in Sterling. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Town of Sterling Fire Department, Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 515, Sterling, MA 01564, or the Alzheimer's Association Massachusetts Chapter, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
