HOLDEN – Esther L. (Nielsen) Wood, 98, of 101 Chadwick St., Worcester, died Monday, May 28, 2007 in UMass Memorial Healthcare, Worcester.
Her husband, John L. Wood, died in 1996. Her first husband, John G. Martin, died in 1968. She leaves her daughter, Ruth S. Martin of Worcester; a brother, Anker J. Nielsen, Jr. of Holden; step-daughter, Joan E. Ethier of Shrewsbury; two step-sons, John L. Wood, Jr. of Pepperell and Stanley D. Wood of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; four grandchildren, Kristin Bergeron of Worcester, Richard Martin of Templeton, Stephanie and Victoria Hazard both of Maryland; ten great-grandchildren; many nephews and nieces. A sister, Anna M. Nielsen, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Anker J. and Annie W. (Gade) Nielsen, Sr., and lived most of her life in Holden before recently moving to Worcester.
Mrs. Wood was a graduate of Holden High School where she was a member of the Pro Merito Society and attended the Post Business Institute in Worcester. She was an Administrative Assistant and Bookkeeper for Olson Manufacturing Company in Holden where she worked for 46 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and served on its Missionary Society. For many years, she volunteered for Holden’s meals-on-wheels program.
The funeral service for Mrs. Wood will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, in the First Church of the Nazarene, Worcester. Burial will be private in Grove Cemetery, Holden. Memorial donations may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene, 146 Burncoat Street, Worcester, MA 01606. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden is directing arrangements.
