RUTLAND– Esther G. (Smith) Murphy, 82, of Main Street, a life long resident of Rutland, died Wednesday, September 6, 2006 in UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester, after an illness.
Her husband of 55 years, Terrence J. Murphy, died in 2003. She leaves three sons, Lawrence D. Murphy of Sterling, Dennis J. Murphy of Worcester and Terrence V. Murphy and his wife Nancy of Charlton; a daughter Evelyn D. Murphy and her husband Colin MacDonald of Rutland; five grandchildren, Heather Murphy, Erin Murphy, Sean MacDonald, Karrie Escoto and Robert LaPierre; three great-grandchildren, Brittany Bast, Lucas LaPierre and Zachary Escoto; a cousin, Phyllis Scales of Rutland; nieces, nephews and her Siamese Cat John. Her sister, Evelyn G. Smith, predeceased her.
She was born in Worcester, daughter of Lawrence E. and Elizabeth B. (Ward) Smith. and was She graduated from Rutland High School in 1942, was a member of First Congregational Church of Rutland and the Order of Eastern Star Persis Putnam Chapter.
The funeral service for Mrs. Murphy will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, in the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery, 142 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Main Street, Rutland. Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, September 8, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden.
