Ernest H. Diesslin

September 26, 1929 — October 25, 2015

HOLDEN – Ernest H. Diesslin, 86, of Holden passed away peacefully at home with his wife by his side on Sunday, October 25, 2015 after an illness. Born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, Ernie was the son of Swiss immigrants, John G and Frieda (Von Gunten) Diesslin and lived over 40 years in Holden.

He leaves his beloved wife of 37 years, Barbara A. (Cierpich) Diesslin; a brother, William C. Diesslin of St. Paul Minnesota; a sister, Elizabeth S. Oslon of Bloomingdale, Minnesota; many nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces. Ernie is predeceased by a brother, George Diesslin.

Ernie attended Humboldt High School in St. Paul, Rasmussen Business School and Worcester Junior College. He was a proud veteran serving in two wars. At the age of 16, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. In 1949, Ernie enlisted in the United States Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Robert A. Owens during the Korean Conflict being honorably discharged in 1951.

He worked over 35 years at Norton Company in Worcester retiring in 1989. After his retirement, Ernie went to work at the Holden Senior Center as a van driver, and for the last five years, was an escort on the senior van until the age of 84. Ernie was a regular daily fixture around the senior center where he could be found discussing local politics or current events. Ernie never thought of being a senior himself. He was always helping or advising his neighbors on almost any topic from lawn care to carpentry projects. He owned almost every kind of tool or gadget known to mankind and was very generous in lending his prize possessions to a neighbor in need. His favorite pastimes were simply spending time with his wife Barbara in their backyard watching their bird feeders, planning their next planting adventure and deciding where they were going out to eat next. He also received great joy in using his metal detector and scratching lottery tickets.

He was a member of St. Christopher’s Church in Worcester, Veterans of Underage Military Service, Disabled American Veterans, and a Past Commander of the John E. Harkins American Legion Post #42 in Holden. He was a member of the Greendale Retired Men’s Club in Worcester and routinely joined his fellow retirees on trips to Foxwoods.
