HOLDEN – Dr. Leroy E. Mayo, 97, of 72 Jamieson Road, died Friday, November 26, 2004, in Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Worcester after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 18 years, Constance R. (Brodeur) Mayo; a sister, Frances Templeton of Albuquerque, New Mexico; eight grandchildren, Roy E. Lane of Sterling, Gary H. Lane of Orleans, James W. Lane of Rutland, Jeffrey M. Lane of Shrewsbury, Catherine E. Nicastro of Ashburnham, Christine E. Adams of Harwich, Cheryl L. Preston of Rochester, NY, and Cynthia A. Kitchen of Yarmouth; 23 great grandchildren; and his son-in-law, Harold M. Lane, Jr. of Holden. His first wife, Gladys H. (Howarth) Mayo, died in 1983. A daughter, Dorothy E. Lane died in 1992, and two brothers, Vernon and Philip Mayo, predeceased him.
Dr. Mayo graduated from the Tilton Prep. School in Laconia, New Hampshire, Tufts College in 1930, where he was captain of both their track and hockey teams, and from Tufts Medical School in 1934. In 1936, he started his professional career as a general medical family practitioner in Holden until entering the service in 1942. During World War II, he received the rank of Major and served from 1942 to 1946 as a flight surgeon with the U.S. Army Air Corps stationed in Northern Africa. After World War II, Dr. Mayo returned home and continued his general practice at the Holden Clinic and later at Wachusett Family Practice. He also served over 25 years as the school physician for Local School Union # 64.
In 1990, a new elementary school in Holden was dedicated in his name, “Dr. Leroy E. Mayo Elementary School”. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Holden, the Boylston Lodge of Masons in West Boylston, Massachusetts Medical Society and the American Medical Association.
The funeral service for Dr. Mayo will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 30, in the First Congregational Church of Holden, 1180 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Holden, at the convenience of the family. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 29, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Leroy E.
