Homer E. Macnutt

HOLDEN – Homer E. MacNutt Jr., 84, of Birchwood Drive died on Saturday, April 9, 2011 in UMass Memorial Health Care-University Campus, after a brief illness.

His wife of 52 years, Elaine G. (Johnson) MacNutt died in 2001. He was predeceased by a sister, Norma Wiles, and an infant son, James MacNutt. He is survived by a son Brett MacNutt and his wife Melinda of Holden; a brother, Robert MacNutt and his wife Elaine of Holden, and several nieces and nephews. Homer was born in Worcester the son of Evelyn (Armstrong) and Homer E. MacNutt Sr. and spent the last 82 years living in Holden.

Mr. MacNutt earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1949. That same year he married his wife Elaine in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Holden. He served in the U.S. Navy before beginning his career in the field of mechanical engineering. Mr. MacNutt owned Worcester Valve Co., and retired as a Vice President of Morgan Construction Co. of Worcester in 1986.

Mr. MacNutt dedicated many years of volunteer service to the town of Holden. He served as a member of the Board of Health for two years. He also served on the Holden School Committee for six years, serving as Chairman of the Committee for three of those years. He also served on the Mountview School Building Committee for five years. Mr. MacNutt dedicated much time to the Gale Free Library in Holden. He served as a Trustee of the Library for 17 years and Chairman of the Gale Free Library Building Renovation Committee for five years. Mr. MacNutt loved painting, photography, wood crafting, and gardening. He particularly enjoyed growing and cultivating orchids in his greenhouse. He is described as having been a loving, dedicated, true gentleman by his friends and loved ones.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12th in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 13th, at 10 a.m. in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 346 Shrewsbury Street, Holden. Burial will follow in All Faiths Cemetery, 7 Island Road, Worcester. In lieu of flowers donations in Mr. MacNutt’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701; or to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Memorial Fund, 346 Shrewsbury Street, Holden, MA 01520.
