PRINCETON - Elsie Lillian (Salmi) Vaughan, 93, of Princeton, died suddenly on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at home with her loving husband and caregiver by her side.
She leaves her husband of 65 years, Roger H. Vaughan; a son, Larry R. Vaughan of Salt Lake City, Utah; a daughter, Susan Morton of Worcester, a granddaughter, Jessica Morton of Worcester and a great-granddaughter, Lilly, also of Worcester.
Elsie was born in Rochester, NY on July 20, 1918 the daughter of John and Hilda (Blomfeldt) Salmi. At the age of 3, Elsie's mother passed away and Elsie was sent to a foster home in Hubbardston where she grew up doing farm chores by day and schoolwork by oil lamp at night. In 1936, she received highest honors out of her graduating class of 177 students at Gardner High School, and many accolades from her teachers. Unable to fund any higher education she moved to Worcester and was employed by Morgan Construction Company. Elsie eventually became secretary to the President, Philip M. Morgan, a position she held for many years.
After Elsie and Roger moved to Princeton in 1951, she was elected town treasurer and volunteered as secretary for the Princeton Center School. This job eventually became permanent and Elsie became a daily presence at both the Center School and the Thomas Prince School for 38 years.
The family would like to express a special Thank You to Dr. Demos Agiomavritis of Worcester for his long time care of Elsie.
A funeral service honoring Elsie's life will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The Rev. Linda Michel will be officiating. Burial will be private at Woodlawn Cemetery in Princeton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a permanent memorial fund in Elsie's name established at Thomas Prince School, “Elsie L. Vaughan Memorial Fund”, c/o Barre Savings Bank, 206 Worcester Road, Princeton, MA 01541.
