HOLDEN – Elsie M. (Frohock) Gonyea, 85, of Holden, died in Holden Nursing Home on Saturday, March 11, 2006, after an illness.
Her husband of 58 years, Romeo A. Gonyea, Sr., died in February of 2001. She leaves her daughter, Faye M. Ellis and her husband David of Holden; two sons, Romeo A. Gonyea, Jr. and his wife Sylvia of Snohomish, Washington, and Larry L. Gonyea of Clearwater, Florida; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Three brothers predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Walter and Ethel (Fielder) Frohock, and lived in Holden for 48 years.
Mrs. Gonyea was a 1939 graduate of the former Commerce High School. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Jefferson, sang in its choir for 25 years, was past president of the Women’s Guild and taught First Communion classes. She was a member of the Holden Grange and the Friends of the Holden Council on Aging. She along with her husband Romeo were volunteers for the Mass. Association for the Blind in Worcester and for the Holden Council on Aging since its inception. They were honored by the Holden Democratic Committee for being “Good Neighbors”, and also were recipients of an award from the Holden Grange for “Community Service”. She worked as an Election Clerk for the Town of Holden for 37 years.
The funeral for Mrs. Gonyea will be held on Wednesday, March 15, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, 162 Webster Street, Worcester. Calling hours are from 5 to 7 on Tuesday, March 14, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of the Holden Council on Aging, 1130 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520.
