Elmer G. 'Poppy' Merchant

July 18, 1921 — October 3, 2014

HOLDEN – Elmer G. “Poppy” Merchant, 93, of Quinapoxet St., Jefferson, died peacefully on Friday, October 3, 2014 at Blaire House of Worcester. He was born in Westminster, the son of the late Joseph and Regina (Brough) Merchant and lived in the Jefferson section of Holden for most of his life.



Elmer was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Celia R. (Wesolowski) in 2013. He is survived by his two daughters, Mary J. Kauppila and her husband, Glenn of Rutland and Janice L. Keskula and her husband, Douglas of Jefferson; two grandsons, David and Michael Kauppila and a granddaughter, Andrea Kauppila all of Rutland; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by three brothers and five sisters.



Elmer proudly served in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during WWII. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with two bronze battle stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a bronze battle star, a Combat Infantry Badge and was awarded a Purple Heart in the performance of his duties. He was a member of the DAV, VFW and the FCOA. Elmer worked for Jefferson Service Station, Jefferson Mill and retired from the Holden Department of Public Works in 1975. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Jefferson, enjoyed camping, hiking and travelling and also loved spending time with his grandchildren and his dogs.



A private committal service will be held on Tuesday, October 14, in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Holden. There are no visiting hours. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Disabled American Veterans Worcester Chapter #4, P.O. Box 60, Worcester, MA 01613, Blaire House of Worcester, 116 Houghton St., Worcester, MA 01604 or to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are under the care of the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
