Vernon Ellsworth Prentice

January 19, 1915 — March 7, 2011

PAXTON – Vernon Ellsworth Prentice, 96, passed away at Holden Nursing Home on Monday, March 7, 2011. Born in Worcester to Harry Vernon and Louella (Bemis) Prentice, he grew up on a dairy farm in Tatnuck, part of which became Worcester Airport. He lived most of his life on West St. in Paxton in a house that he and his late wife Viola (Crouch) Prentice designed and built in 1950. They were married for 69 1/2 years.

A graduate of Commerce High School, he also took courses at MIT. Vern was the former superintendant of the wheelhead Dept. at Cincinnati Milicron, formerly Heald Machine Co. in Worcester. He was a former member of the Volunteer Fire Depts. in Tatnuck and Paxton and served on the Board of Health in Paxton. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Paxton and the Rufus Putnam Masonic Lodge in Rutland. Vern loved cars and driving and enjoyed talking and reading about them.

In addition to his wife, Vern was predeceased by his brother, Harrison H. and his wife Rachel (Parker) Prentice and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clifford C. and Lilla (Crouch) Spongberg.

Vern leaves his daughters, Gail Ann P. Belanger and her husband Charles F., Jr. of Holden and Marilou P. Barratt and her husband Thomas R. of Myersville, MD; four grandchildren, Michelle B. Shea and her husband Michael of Vienna, VA, Russell E. Barratt and his wife Anna M. of Myersville, MD, Christopher C. Belanger and his wife Christina E. Gessler of Summerland, CA, Joy B. Maidrand and her husband Craig D. of Dover, NH; four great-grandchildren, Megan N. and Kaitlyn M. Barratt of Myersville, Alexia Belanger of Summerland, and Zachary C. Maidrand of Dover; two nephews, Gary R. Spongberg and his wife Lucy C. of Niscayuna, NY. and Larry C. Spongberg of Paxton. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend and will be missed by all.

A memorial service for Mr. Prentice will be held on Monday, March 14th, at 11 a.m. in the First Congregational Church in Paxton, 1 Church Street, Paxton, MA 01612. Burial at Mooreland Cemetery will be private and held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the church. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
