WEST BOYLSTON – Blanche Elizabeth (McLoughlin) Houston, 81, formerly of Maple Street, West Boylston, died peacefully on Monday, October 19, 2009 in the Knollwood Nursing Center, West Boylston, after an illness.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Robert S. Houston also of Knollwood; her daughter, Beth Houston and her husband Karl Gerds of Natick; and two sisters, Dorothy F. McLoughlin and Corrine Mary McLoughlin, both of Holden. She was born in 1927 in Holden, the daughter of the late Thomas F. and Cora F. (Mosher) McLoughlin.
Mrs. Houston graduated from Holden High School in 1945 and received her nursing degree from Memorial Hospital in 1948. She worked as assistant head nurse in the maternity ward at Memorial until the birth of her daughter in 1959. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Jefferson prior to her marriage where she was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in West Boylston for the past 45 years. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards as well as vacationing in Ogunquit, Maine. She was a long time follower of the Boston Red Sox.
The family would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to all of her caregivers at the Knollwood Nursing Center for their kindness and support.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21st, in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 111 Worcester Street, West Boylston. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, 1326 Main Street, Holden. At Mrs. Houston’s request, there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Beaman Memorial Public Library, 8 Newton Street, West Boylston, MA 01583; or the Dorothy F. McLoughlin Scholarship Fund, c/o the Worcester Foundation at Worcester State College, 486 Chandler Street, Worcester, MA 01602. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden is directing arrangements.
