Biography
HOLDEN – Elizabeth “Betty” J. Provost, 93, formerly of Main Street, died peacefully on Saturday, October 20, 2012, in the presence of her loving family. Born and raised in Worcester, Betty was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ellen (McGuinn) Londergan and lived 56 years in Holden.
Betty graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester where she played field hockey and participated in competitive rowing, ice skate racing and bicycling. After attending Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing, Betty fulfilled her life-long dream of caring for others as a registered nurse and began her career at Worcester City Hospital. She spent several years as a private duty nurse, and later worked over 20 years at Holden Nursing Home retiring as a nursing supervisor.
Her passion and willingness to help others inspired and influenced five of her family members to enter the nursing profession and continue her legacy of caring and compassion and tending to those in need of care. She was proud of all of her family members and looked forward to listening to their life stories, dreams and aspirations. She will be remembered for her generosity, kind and gentle nature, devotion, sweet-contagious smile, and her ability to find the time to raise five children and bake the best date-nut breads and apple pies. She was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Church in Jefferson and the Alumni Association of Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing.
Betty’s beloved husband of 65 years, Norman “Whitey” S. Provost, Sr. died in 2008. She is survived and will be greatly missed her three daughters, Suzanne E. Brown and her husband Bruce of Holden, Patricia A. Provost of Worcester and Cynthia M. Granger and her husband Richard of Princeton; two sons, Norman S. Provost, Jr. and his wife Roberta of Spencer and Albert L. Provost and his wife Laurie of Princeton; 8 grandchildren, Richard, Matthew and Mackenzie Granger, Jacqueline Caron, Norman and Alexandra Provost, Daniel and Joseph Provost. Besides her husband, Betty is predeceased by grandsons, Andrew Brown, infant William Granger and infant Provost.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 23, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, and again on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. followed by a procession to St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Interment will be held at Grove Cemetery, 1296 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alumni Association of the Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing, Annie Vigeant Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 20369, West Side Station, Worcester, MA 01602.
