Elinor "Jean" (Tibbets) Pentland

December 31, 1932 — June 14, 2021

WORCESTER/PAXTON – Elinor “Jean” (Tibbets) Pentland, age 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 14, 2021 at UMass Medical Center – University Campus in Worcester. Born in Melrose, she was the daughter of the late Percy F. and Elinor (Horne) Tibbets.

Jean graduated from Melrose High School and Middlebury College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts. It was while vacationing at the family home in Wells, ME where she met the love of her life, Richard R. Pentland. They started their family in Buffalo, NY and moved a few times from Wallingford, CT, to Holden, and spent the majority of their lives in Paxton before moving to The Willows in Worcester.

She worked for many years at the family business, Jefferson Rubber Works, in both finance and accounting. She loved animals and seeing the birds who came to the feeder, caring for and tending to her gardens, and sports of all kinds. She was a graceful figure skater and an avid tennis player. She especially loved cheering on her children and grandchildren at sporting events and rooting for her New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox. Jean further enjoyed sailing and traveling, especially her trips to the British Virgin Islands, Cape Cod, and Wells Beach. She was a kind, thoughtful and caring person that would go out of her way to welcome and please others. Above all, she was devoted to her family and friends.

She will be lovingly missed by her husband of 63 years, Richard R. Pentland of Worcester; a son, David Pentland and his wife, Susan of Princeton; two daughters, Julia Conte and her husband, Jay of Paxton, Nancy DeGrace and her husband, Robert of Lunenburg; seven grandchildren, Jon, Zach, Laurel, Peter and his wife Jackie, Steven, Emma and Jake; and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother, Frederick “Bud” Tibbets and her sister, Frances “Fran” Toperzer.

Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Paxton, Sweetpea F.O.R. Animals, or the Worcester Animal Rescue League. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden.
