HOLDEN - Mr. Eli S. Sanderson, 89, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2015 at The Overlook in Charlton, Ma.
Mr. Sanderson was predeceased by his loving wife Madeline, and his sister Marion. Eli leaves behind his two daughters: Marilyn Sanderson and her husband John Hettinger of Lincoln, NH, and Elaine Cavanaugh and her husband Garrett of Townsend. He also leaves three grandchildren, Brendan Cavanaugh, Garrett D. Cavanaugh and Caitrin Tesch and her husband Justin, and a great grandson, Gunnar.
Mr. Sanderson was born in Boston in 1925 and grew up in the Worcester area with his parents Susan and Fred Sanderson and his sister Marion. He graduated from South High School in Worcester and then joined the Army Air Corps during WWII. After the war he attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering and then went to work for Norton Company as an industrial engineer. He moved up to head the engineering department. Mr. Sanderson retired in 1982.
Eli met his wife Madeline at Norton Company. They lived in Holden and had two daughters. Mr. Sanderson was an active member of the All Saints Church in Worcester since 1951 serving as an usher and on the Building and Grounds Committee. He was also a long time member of the Masons and belonged to the West Boylston Lodge. Mr. Sanderson volunteered for over 20 years for the AARP Tax Aide Program helping the elderly fill out their tax forms. He was an active member of the WISE program at Assumption College where he took courses and traveled the world. Mr. Sanderson and his wife traveled in 49 of the 50 states, were active square dancers, and enjoyed walking in the woods. After his wife passed away he took up skiing and hiking with his daughter and husband in New Hampshire.
A graveside service will be held for the family at the Grove Cemetery in Holden in the spring. Memorial contributions can be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, 10 Irving St. in Worcester, MA 01609, the Shriners Hospital for Children, Boston, MA 02114 or to the charity of your choice.
