Eleanor V. (Harney) Mathieu Russell

March 27, 1916 — October 25, 2012

HOLDEN – Eleanora V. (Harney) Mathieu Russell, 96, formerly of Apple Tree Lane in Holden, died peacefully on Thursday, October 25, 2012 under the loving care of her family and the staff at Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Worcester. Born in Worcester and raised in Paxton, Eleanora lived 35 years in Worcester and over 40 years in Holden.

She was the general manager at Jobbers Outlet, Inc., worked at Riley Stoker as an accounting clerk, and later owned and operated Eleanora’s Designing and Custom Tailoring in Holden, retiring in 1979. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Jefferson and its Guild, and sang in the choir for many years. She was also a member of the Friends of the Holden Council on Aging, Holden Women’s Club, Holden Grange, St. Jude League, Worcester County Mechanics Association and was past president of the Lady’s Auxiliary of Worcester Council #136 - United Commercial Travelers.

Eleanora’s enthusiasm and conviction was no secret for those who knew her. She was the long-time coordinator and director of the Holden Rainbow Senior Travelers, a group comprised of area seniors that would take day trips from Chicopee to week-long adventures in Alaska. These trips provided a safe and cost-effective way for seniors to travel. She was coined as the “energizer battery rabbit” by those who knew her. Eleanor was a strong supporter of the March of Dimes, a charity she invested a great deal of personal time. She was the top walker in Massachusetts for the March of Dimes fund-raising walk and made top honors in the Worcester County on several occasions. In her spare time, she still found time to maintain a lavish perennial garden, manicured flower beds, and a carpet of deep-green lawn.

Her husband, William A. Russell died in 1980. She is survived by a son, Paul A. Mathieu of Worcester; a daughter, Joyce E. Chambers of Worcester; three grand and nine great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her first husband, Albert A. Mathieu; three brothers, William T., Gregory A. and Gerard B. Harney; three sisters, Margaret M. Smith Moors, Mary A. and Elizabeth T. Harney.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Eleanora’s family from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 3, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, followed by a procession to St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Mooreland Cemetery in Paxton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
