LANCASTER, MA – Elberta F. (Bollinger) Steinel, 72, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004, in the New England Sinai Hospital, Stoughton.
She was born in Oklahoma City in 1931. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma, then married Nathan Altucher and settled in Buffalo, NY, where she raised three children. Sh remarried in 1976 and returned to Oklahoma where she taught English, English as a second language and GED skills, as well as directing the literacy program for the Metropolitan Library System of Oklahoma City. Her great joy in life was books and reading, and she read voraciously. She shared her love of books and language through her teaching. She lived for a year in Bangkok, Thailand, and circled the globe - one of the highlights of her life. She is survived by three children, Sandy (Perley Mears), Kris (Lynn Podhaski), and Tony Altucher (Collette Young). She is also survived by four beloved grandchildren, her sister, Levita Bollinger, and her former husband and life-long friend, Mike Steinel. Because of her enduring commitment to peace and social justice, donations in her memory may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union or Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.
A Memorial Service in her memory will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 26, 2004, in the First Church of Christ Unitarian, 725 Main Street (On the Common), Lancaster. There are no calling hours. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, is directing arrangements.
