HOLDEN – Elaine M. (Zoppo) Swenson, 66, of Jefferson, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of her loving family on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born and raised in Holden, Elaine was the loving daughter of Michael J. and Antoinette (Lanzilotti) Zoppo, and lived here her entire life.
Elaine was a 1966 graduate of Wachusett Regional High School in Holden. She later attended Becker College where she earned her associate's degree in medical office administration. Elaine followed her passion of caring for others and attended the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1973. Upon graduating nursing school, Elaine realized that her calling was to specialize and assist critically ill children and went to work as a Registered Nurse at Memorial Hospital, Holden District Hospital, and most recently, Centrus Premier Homecare where she practiced for over 10 years. In 2013, she was selected and awarded the “Caregiver of the Year,” nationally throughout the entire Centrus group. Elaine affectionately cared for her patients as if they were her own children, and after twenty five years, still stayed in touch with many of them.
She was a virtuous woman of strong faith and attended Holden Chapel with her husband, Paul. She loved being a wife and mother and particularly enjoyed looking forward to spending time with her family on any occasion that would bring them closer together. She will be remembered for her selfless and compassionate nature.
Elaine leaves her husband of 41 years, Paul R. Swenson; her two sons, Eric P. Swenson of Holden and Daren P. Swenson of Winter Garden, Florida; and a brother, Wayne Zoppo and his wife, Virginia of Seekonk.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Elaine’s family from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, followed by a funeral service honoring her life at 4 p.m. Interment at Grove Cemetery in Holden will be held privately in the spring.
