February 25, 1923 — January 15, 2019

RUTLAND – Elaine M. (Barre) Suchocki, 95, longtime Rutland resident, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, surrounded by her family, at the Holden Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Her beloved husband, William W. Suchocki passed away in 1985. Born in Bronxville, NY, she was a daughter of Gaston and Albina (Haufbauer) Barre. At the age of 7, along with her family, she moved to France where she and her brother, Gaston and sister, Albina attended a Catholic boarding school for the next 8 years.

Elaine was living in Paris at the start of WWII and was on the last train to leave before the German Occupation. She relocated to Valence, France during the war and was a member of the French Red Cross, oftentimes feeding the prisoners. She met her husband, Bill, during this time who was an M.P. in the U.S. Army. They married and together they moved to the United States where they settled in Rutland to raise their family of six children.

Elaine’s life was fulfilled by her faith and her love for her family. She was a dedicated member of St. Patrick’s Parish in Rutland for over 60 years, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, a C.C.D. teacher and member of the prayer chain. Most near and dear to her heart was her devotion to The National Shrine of The Devine Mercy in Stockbridge, MA.
She will be lovingly missed and remembered by her children including Mary-Joy O’Malley and her husband, David of Rutland, Joanne M. Suchocki of Auburn, Daniel W. Suchocki and his wife, Lila of Rutland, Christine A. Hunt and her fiancé, Bernie Demers of Rutland and Denis G. Suchocki and his wife, Christina of Rutland; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and a son-in-law, Paul Stukowski of Worcester. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Ann-Marie Stukowski, her brother, Gaston Barre and her sister, Albina Cormick.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Holden Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the kind, compassionate and loving care they provided to Elaine over the past ten years.
