HOLDEN/WORCESTER – Eileen R. (Kelly) Longden, 90, formerly of Holden and a resident of the Briarwood Continuing Care Retirement Community in Worcester, died peacefully on Monday, September 19, 2011 at the Knollwood Nursing Center, Worcester. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 32 years, Robert E. Longden, and an infant daughter, Margaret Mary Longden.
She was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on July 2, 1921, the daughter of Francis and Margaret (Dwyer) Kelly and lived in Holden for many years before moving to Worcester. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Montclair State Teachers College, New Jersey, in 1943 and a Master’s degree in Mathematics from Worcester State College. She taught mathematics at Wachusett Regional High School in Holden from 1967 to 1984 and thereafter taught mathematics at both Nichols College and Assumption College.
Eileen was a member of St. Christopher’s Church in Worcester and a former member of St. Mary’s Church in Jefferson, where she was a Eucharistic Minister. She loved opera and classical music and was active in the Worcester Music Guild, now Music Worcester, and Opera Worcester for many years. Eileen was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, an outstanding teacher and a loyal and generous friend.
She leaves her five children, Ellen Breyer and her husband Jan of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Robert E. Longden and his wife Joanna of Holden, John M. Longden and his wife Linda of Acton, Kevin T. Longden of Moorpark, California, and Maura J. Longden and her husband Rich Baerwald of Victor, Idaho; two cousins, John Dwyer and his wife Odile of Elka Park, New York and Susan Fordi and her husband Paul of Westminster, Maryland; twelve grandchildren: Jon, Colin and Gavin Breyer, Timothy, Carolyn , Christopher, Jennifer, Eric, Alaina and Conor Longden, and Dvra and Tyler Glynn; five great-grandchildren and her special friend and caregiver, Paula Holloway.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, September 25th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte 122A), Holden. Her funeral will be held on Monday, September 26th, from the funeral home with a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eileen’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 128 Providence Street, Worcester, MA 01604.
