STERLING – Donald E. Hulse, 71, of 49 Old Princeton Road West, died Friday, April 11, 2008 in UMass Memorial Healthcare, Worcester, after an illness.
He leaves his lifelong companion of 31 years, Marianne Thomas of Sterling; his former wife, Joan M. Jegelewicz of Athol; two sons, Jim D. Hulse and his wife Kathleen of Clarksville, TN and John E. Hulse and his wife Kim of Wichita, KS; two daughters, Gaylene Hulse-Buck of Barre and Jeneen Hulse-Amado and her husband Jose of Fitchburg; 5 brothers, Bill Hulse, John Rice Jr., Dennis, Jerry and Terry Rice all of Kansas; 7 sisters, Norma Hulse, Frances, MaryJane, Debbie, Virginia, Barbara and Dorothy Rice of all of Kansas; 15 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; many nephews and nieces; and his beloved cats, Lenny and Squiggy. Two brothers, Claude and Jimmy Rice, and his step-father, John Rice, predeceased him.
Don was born and raised in Chetopa, Kansas, son of Harlan M. and Lillian G. (Oakley) Hulse, and lived in Kansas before moving to Sterling 40 years ago. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He worked for Nypro Co. in Clinton for 13 years. He was a member of the Hiram O' Taylor American Legion Post 189 in Sterling and a past member of the Sterling 8 Point Sportsmen's Club. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed nature and photography. Don will be most fondly remembered for his role as Santa at the Whitney Field Mall and at many local events and organizations.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 13th, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. The funeral service for Don will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 14th, in the funeral home followed by burial in Hillside Cemetery, Clinton Road (Rte. 62), Sterling. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Town of Sterling Fire Department, Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 515, Sterling; or the First Church in Sterling Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 40, Sterling, MA 01564.
