Edward Zukowski

HOLDEN – Edward Zukowski, 85, of 108 Mill Street, died Friday, April 2, 2004, in UMass Memorial Medical Center-Memorial Campus after a short illness.

He leaves his wife of 59 years, Jean M. (Geoffrion) Zukowski; three sons, Edward J. Zukowski and James G. Zukowski both of Holden and David P. Zukowski of Westminister; a daughter, Sharon A. Coolidge of Rutland; a brother, Raymond Zukowski of Worcester; two sisters, Eve Todd of Northborough and Anne Mariam of Canterbury, Connecticut; 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A son, Robert A. Zukowski, and three brothers, Albin Zukofski and George and Frank Zukowski, predeceased him.

He was born in Worcester on January 9, 1919, son of Anthony and Anastasia (Romanasa) Zukowski. He graduated from Holden High School class of 1937. During World War II Edward enlisted in the Army. On December 20, 1942 he graduated Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia and was assigned as a 2nd Lieutenant to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. They were known as the Japanese-American Regiment. He was wounded in Littorno, Italy on June 26, 1944 and his decorations and citations included the Combat Infantry Badge, American Defense Ribbon, European-African Middle Eastern Ribbon with one Battle Star, a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He was discharged from the Army as a First Lieutenant on August 12, 1945.

Mr. Zukowski owned and operated the Leicester Public Market and later worked as a Meat Manager for Iandoli Market, the Big D and Food Land in Holden before retiring in 1967. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, raising Golden Retrievers and spending time at his Lake Matawa Camp.

Mr. Zukowski’s funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 5, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 4 in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Massachusetts Veterans Shelter, 69 Grove Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
