WORCESTER – Edward R. Opacki, 68, of Worcester, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

Eddie was born in Worcester, MA and raised in Millbury. He attended Worcester Boy’s Trade High School where he studied carpentry. After graduating, Eddie enlisted in the Unites States’ Army and served his country from 1968 to 1970. In Vietnam, Sgt. Opacki received the Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone and ultimately extended his tour of duty to finish his military service with honor.

In 1972, Eddie married the love of his life, Linda B. Sand, and together they raised two daughters. Eddie’s career spanned 38 years with the United States Postal Service. He began as a postal clerk and was proudly promoted multiple times, often serving as acting Postmaster in districts throughout Massachusetts. Eddie retired as Manager of Customer Service in the Worcester Post Office.

Eddie was known to his friends and family as a strong, hard working man who was quick with a laugh and would do anything for the people he loved. Eddie enjoyed sports, fine dining, movies, television, and traveling with Linda.

Eddie leaves his wife of 43 years, Linda B. (Sand) Opacki; two daughters, Amanda L. Doherty and her husband, Rick Doherty of Northborough and Courtney L. Doell and her husband Andrew Doell of San Diego, California; four grandchildren, Alex DiPadua, Cullen Doherty, Sophie and Audrey Doell; a sister, Lorna Gilchrist of Spencer; and three nephews, John, Jake, and Jesse Gilchrist. Eddie was predeceased by his mother and father, Carl and Frances (Trombowicz) Opacki, sister Carlene Allard and brother Carl Opacki.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Eddies’s family from 4 to 7 pm on Sunday, August 9, at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 am on Monday, August 10, at St. George’s Church, 38 Brattle St., Worcester, followed by interment at Grove Cemetery in Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eddie’s memory to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation (PKD), 8330 Ward Pkwy., Suite 510, Kansas City. MO 64114 ( www.pkdcure.org ).
