RUTLAND – Edward D. McGloine, age 64, passed away suddenly at home in Rutland on Saturday, December 25, 2021. Born in Rockville Centre, NY, he was the son of the late Edward D. and Bridget (Kiernan) McGloine.
Known as “Squarehead” by many, Ed spent most of his early life in Long Island, spending summers caddying at Fresh Meadows Country Club in Lake Success, NY. He proudly graduated from Chaminade High School in Mineola, NY and went on to graduate from the State University of New York in Plattsburgh, NY with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. An all-around sports enthusiast, Ed excelled in ice hockey throughout both high school and college.
He raised his family in New York and Connecticut before residing for many years in Rutland. He was a passionate New York Islanders, Seton Hall Pirates college basketball team and Boston Red Sox fan. His love of all sports brought him all over the country, with many believing he’s been to well over 1000 sporting events throughout his life. He enjoyed photography, biking, kayaking, snowboarding with his daughter out west, and traveling all over the world with his children. An avid golfer, Ed never missed the annual summer golf outing in Lake Placid NY with his hockey friends. Through his travels, Ed enjoyed visiting the National Parks. He also lived for live music and enjoyed listening to the blues rock band, Hot Tuna. Ed was an active longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church in Rutland.
He is survived by his wife, Maryellen (Tangry) McGloine of Putnam, CT; three sons, Daniel McGloine and his wife, Laura of Acton, Andrew McGloine and his wife, Mary of Boston, Aidan McGloine of Putnam, CT; a daughter, Emily Lovaas-McGloine of Denver, CO; a brother, Kevin McGloine and his wife, Patricia of Virginia Beach, VA; a sister, Mary McGloine-Hynes and her husband, Edward of Rockville Centre, NY; a sister-in-law, Grace McGloine; and two grandchildren, Gretta and Agnes McGloine. He also leaves behind his dear friends, Tony Gerbino of Long Island, NY, Tim Pitney of Shrewsbury, MA, Harry Keeshan of Greenwich, CT as well as his Plattsburgh Cardinals Community.
Besides his parents, Ed is predeceased by his brother, John McGloine, his sister, Eileen McGloine, and by his close friend, Dennis Quinn, formerly of Long Island, NY.
The streets of Rutland will feel a bit emptier without Ed on his morning bike rides.
“The family would be remiss without acknowledging and calling attention to the specific circumstances of Ed’s death. Despite repeated pleas from his loved ones, he unfortunately chose to not be vaccinated against the covid-19 virus. He tested positive for the virus in early December then succumbed to it in a short and sudden time frame. Please, please encourage your loved ones to get vaccinated to protect themselves and the people around them from this devastating virus.”
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service honoring his life at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 11th at St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main St., Rutland. The family requests all guests attending the Mass of Christian Burial be fully vaccinated and to wear masks during the service.
