HOLDEN – Edward H. Leonard, 91, of Holden Street died on Saturday, December 4, 2010, in UMass Memorial Healthcare, Memorial Campus, Worcester.
He was born in Berwick, Maine, son of Edward H. and Ethel M. (Stewart) Leonard, and lived in Holden for 43 years. He graduated from Arlington High School and Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. He earned Masters' degrees from Tufts University and the University of New Hampshire. Under a National Science Foundation Grant, he completed the Academic Year Institute Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Mr. Leonard was a Professor of Natural Science at Worcester State College for 18 years, retiring in 1984 as Professor Emeritus. He was previously head of the Hanover, NH High School Science Department, before accepting a teaching position at Westfield State College. He was an accomplished educator, inventor and loving husband, father and brother.
His wife of 36 years, Charlotte E. (Gidley) Leonard, died in 1987. He leaves his son with whom he lived, Edward H. Leonard III, and his devoted caregiver, Dianne. His sister, Virginia Leonard, predeceased him in 1994.
A calling hour will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, December 10th, followed by a Funeral Service at 7 p.m. in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will be private in North Dartmouth Friends Meeting Cemetery in North Dartmouth, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Friends of the Holden Council on Aging, 1130 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520.
