Edward B. Gildutis

STERLING – Edward B. Gildutis, 88, of Charles Patten Drive, a 60-year resident of Sterling, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006 in the Health Alliance-Leominster Hospital, after a short illness.

He leaves his wife with whom he celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on May 1st, Charlotte (Patten) Gildutis; two daughters, Gail E. Merrill and her husband Dana, and their two children Dean and Danielle of Goffstown, NH, and Barbara J. Stanney and her husband Bill, and their two children Will and Chrissy of Northboro; and many nieces and nephews. Two sisters predeceased him.

He was born in Athol, son of the late John and Veronica (Tilus) Gildutis. He was a 1936 graduate of Athol High School and attended the Yale School of Photography at Yale University. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II serving as a Corporal in the European Theater.

Mr. Gildutis worked 30 years in the Field Engineering Dept. at Mass Electric Co., retiring in 1982. He was a member of the First Church of Sterling serving as a deacon and head usher. He was a member of the Hiram O. Taylor American Legion Post 189 in Sterling, and the Sterling Historical Society where he served as trustee, vice president and treasurer for several years. While in high school, he was captain of the football, ice hockey and tennis teams where he earned the nickname the “Powerhouse”. He was a champion tennis player in Athol and an excellent skier having skied at Tuckerman’s Ravine. He enjoyed photography, gardening, growing plenty of vegetables to share with his family and neighbors, collecting antique bottles, fishing and cross country skiing. He loved music and had quite a collection of records and CDs.

A memorial service for Mr. Gildutis will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 15, in the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meeting House Hill Road, Sterling. Burial will be private in Oak Hill Cemetery, Clinton Road, Sterling. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Church in Sterling, P.O. Box 40, Sterling, MA 01564; or the Sterling Historical Society, P.O. Box 356, Sterling, MA 01564. Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling, is directing arrangements.
