Edward A. Leahy

Edward A. Leahy, (Ed) born in Holden on June 12, 1932, son of the late Edward F. and Isabelle L. (Krizinowek) Leahy, passed away on May 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

A graduate of Holden High School, class of 1951. He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He married Audrey Wolfe on May 4th, 1957 at St. Mary's Church in Jefferson. They lived in Jefferson where they raised their 2 children.

Ed served as past president of the Holden Lions Club and was a member of the former Holden Contractor assoc of Holden. After graduating high school, he attended the former Worcester Junior College and worked for Holden Trap Rock. He also worked at the former Scandia Bakery in Holden and then Svea Bakery in Millbury as a baker. His famous words were “No one ever died from hard work.” Ed and Audrey started Leahy Construction, Inc in 1959, and both retired in 1994 when his son Ted and Donna took over as Leahy Excavating Co. Inc.

Ed and Audrey returned home each spring, and Ed would quickly return to the company to work alongside his grandsons. He ran the backhoe and screening plant until he was 88. He was an avid fisherman and had his U.S. Merchant Marine Captain’s Officer license and U.S. Coastguard license. He ran a Charter fishing boat company in the Sandwich Marina for many years. They camped for many years at Bourne Scenic Park. In April of 1994, they bought a place at Ft. Myers Beach, FL where Ed enjoyed fishing for “grouper” and Audrey loved the beach. They enjoyed over 28 years of sunshine until Hurricane Ian came along and swept away their belongings at Gulf Cove Park in September of 2022. Through the years they loved going to the Red Sox games with their friends Barb and Hubb, Claudia and Remi, Bev and Bob, and Mike and Cloretta.

Ed is survived by his wife, Audrey of 66 years, and his two children, Edward C. (Ted) Leahy and his daughter-in-law, Donna Doherty and Sharon A. Leahy-Lind; seven grandchildren, Edward R. (Teddy) Leahy, Jonathan D. Leahy and fiance Tiana Zarella, Krystal Leahy and fiance Erik Wohlander, Amy Cornish and husband David, Heather Gonzalez and husband Angel, Elizabeth Stoothoff and husband Jay, and Alexandra Powers and husband Michael; five great-grandchildren, Abigail Cornish, David Cornish, Amina Wohlander, Chase Smajkiewicz and Wyatt Leahy; a sister-in-law, Beverly Wolfe and partner Bob McCullough; and many nieces and nephews. His sister-in-law, Claudia Barrows, predeceased him.

He was very fortunate on his last day to be with Amina who brought him M&M's every day, and Wyatt who brought a smile to his face. Ed's family would like to give a special thanks to Donna Doherty for giving him special care during this difficult time.
