HOLDEN – Edna M. (Webber) Gledhill Cannell, 98, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2015 at UMass Memorial Healthcare - University Campus after an illness. She was born in Worcester, the daughter of W. Emerson and Gertrude M. (Harvey) Webber. She grew up attending public schools in West Boylston and then Auburn. She was a High School of Commerce Class of 1935 graduate and lived in Holden about 70 years.
She leaves two sons, John W. Gledhill and his wife, Karen of Somerville and Edwin H. Gledhill of Holden with whom she shared her home these last ten years; three greatly-loved grandchildren, Douglas, Sarah and Julia; and nephews, nieces and first cousins. She was predeceased by her first husband, Edwin Gledhill; a brother, Albert Harvey Webber; two sisters, Lois Holmes Johnstone and Ruth Virginia Redlund; and her former husband, Phillip Cannell.
At the age of 55, Edna earned her bachelor’s degree and later continued her education and earned her master’s degree, both from Worcester State College. She taught for ten years in local school systems until she retired in 1982. Edna was a member of the League of Women Voters and Chaffin Congregational Church since 1947, where she was the last charter member of the Mary Martha Circle. She served as Sunday school superintendent, chairman of the Christian Education Committee and later many other committees. She was a member of the former Chaffin’s Women’s Club and Friends of the Holden Council on Aging. She was an avid reader and enjoyed bird watching and politics. She vacationed in Kennebunkport, Maine many summers.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 17, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. Funeral services for Edna will be held on Saturday, July 18, at 10 a.m. in Chaffin Congregational Church, 155 Shrewsbury St., Holden, MA 01520. Burial will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery in North Brookfield.
