HOLDEN – Edith M. (Noftle) Masters, age 98, passed away peacefully at home in Holden with her family by her side. Born in St. Johns, Newfoundland, Edith was the daughter of the late John and Amelia (Gill) Noftle.
Edith grew up on a farm in Newfoundland and lived 26 years in Canada, where the last few years she spent teaching in a 1 room schoolhouse. At 26, she moved to Massachusetts where she fell in love and married William L. Masters in 1954. They started their family in Somerville and raised their children in Maynard before eventually moving in with her daughter in Holden in the early 1990s. She worked for many years as a supervisor at Gen-Rad in Bolton.
She was an active member at the First Baptist Church in Holden where she was in the Women’s Group. In her free time, she enjoyed knitting mittens to go in care packages for the homeless supported by the First Baptist Church. Most importantly, she loved her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Donna Smith and her husband, Scott of Holden, Linda Mettauer and her husband, Mark of CO; 2 sons, Donald Masters and his wife, Rhonda of MI, Robert Masters and his wife, Donna of, FL; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren. Edith is predeceased by her husband, William L. Masters; and 2 sons, John and William Masters.
Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service honoring Edith’s life at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 19th, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden.
