WORCESTER – Edith L. (Hawes) Newell, 82, of 92 Brandon Rd. died Saturday, March 5, 2005, in Autumn Village Nursing Home, Worcester after an illness.
Her husband of 55 years, Laurence R. Newell, Sr., died in 1998. She leaves a son, Laurence R. Newell, Jr. and his wife Joyce of Worcester; a daughter, Lenora J. Newell of Worcester; four grandchildren, Paula Bernard, Vikki Ostromecky, Rachel Lindquist and Kevin Newell all of Worcester; six great-grandchildren, Jessica and Joseph Bernard, Tyler and Kaitlyn Lindquist and Paige and Ashley Newell all of Worcester. A brother, Frederick Hawes, Jr., predeceased her. She was born in Orono, Maine, the daughter of Frederick and Viola (Mann) Hawes, and lived over 40 years in Holden before moving back to Worcester in 1990.
Mrs. Newell graduated from North High School and worked at Reed and Prince Company and Allen’s Florist all in Worcester. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Holden, Holden Grange and Holden Garden Club.
The funeral service for Mrs. Newell will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte 122A), Holden. Burial will be private in the spring in High Plain Cemetery, High Street, Oakdale. Calling hours are from 6 from 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, in the funeral home.
