HOLDEN – Earl James “Jim” Gibbons, Jr., 79, a lifelong resident of Holden, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2016 surrounded by family. Jim was the son of Earl J., Sr. and Jeannette I. (Provost) Gibbons.
Jim served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Berlin Crisis. He returned home and continued his commitment to service by joining the Holden Police Department. During his years as a police officer Jim earned a degree in criminal justice from Quinsigamond Community College and also served as the Holden Safety Officer. He retired from the Holden Police Department as a sergeant after nearly 20 years of service.
Jim’s unwavering love and support for his family was evident in his tireless advocacy for his son Todd and others with disabilities. Jim was actively involved in Special Olympics at the local, regional and state levels and served on the board of directors for the Massachusetts Special Olympics.
Jim was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served as a volunteer fireman for the Town of Holden, a member of the Massachusetts Police Association, the Massachusetts Safety Officers Association and the Nimrod league of Holden. Jim was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed woodworking, watching sports and above all spending time with his family.
Jim, cherished and loved by all, is survived by his wife of 51 years , Nina, and three children, Kim and husband, Paul Browne of Rutland, Todd Gibbons of Rutland , Craig and wife, Denise Gibbons of Millis; sister, Doris “Snookie” Ann and her husband, Donald French of Holden; and four grandchildren, Paul “PJ” Browne, Parker Browne, Logan Gibbons and Luke Gibbons; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 23, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Funeral services for Jim will be held on Monday, Oct. 24, from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Burial will follow at Grove Cemetery in Holden. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Nimrod League of Holden, PO Box 254, Holden MA 01520.
