HOLDEN – E. Mark Williams, III, 70, of Harvest Circle, passed from this world on Friday, April 16, 2010 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mark is survived by his beloved wife and companion, Jane (Maroni) Williams; his loving daughters, Elizabeth W. Norberg, Katharine A. Williams and Christina L. Williams; his brothers, Paul J. Williams, Peter S. Williams and John Lord; and his four grandchildren, Mark Andrew Williams, Nicholas and Jack Norberg and Penelope Williams; as well as numerous other family and friends.
Born in Sewickley, PA, the son of Edgar M. and Helen M. (Curran) Williams, Mark spent most of his childhood in Weston, CT. After graduating from The Hotchkiss School, he went on to earn his BS in Physics at Williams College. He then worked for several years as an engineer at Sprague Electric in North Adams. An interest in financial management led him to join the brokerage firm of Paine Webber (later merged with UBS), where he spent the remainder of his career. As assistant manager of the Worcester branch office, he became a trusted colleague and good friend to many business owners and investors in our area, and could often be found hosting clients at the Worcester Club.
Mark was also an active member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Holden, and while serving as senior warden played a central role in the church’s expansion. He later served as a trustee of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts. His deep faith and commitment to others led him to serve as Investment Chair of the Executive Committee of Children’s Friend, one of our nation’s oldest charitable organizations for children’s welfare. He found through this charity a way to use his professional skills to help others less fortunate find the same love and affection he gave to his own children and grandchildren.
A memorial service and celebration of Mark’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 21st in St. Francis Episcopal Church, 70 Highland Street, Holden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Children’s Friend, 21 Cedar Street, Worcester, MA 01609, or St. Francis Episcopal Church, 70 Highland Street, Holden, MA 01520. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden is assisting the family with arrangements.
