John D. Westerlind

HOLDEN – John D. Westerlind, Jr., 65, of Mt. View Drive, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at UMass Memorial Healthcare-University Campus, Worcester.
He leaves his wife of 41 years, Betty (Nixon) Westerlind; a daughter, Kara Frankian and her husband Brett of Shrewsbury and their two children, Tanner Robert and Riley John; a son, Matthew Westerlind of Holden; three brothers, James Westerlind and his wife Eiko of Springfield, VA, Paul Westerlind of Dunedin, FL and David Westerlind and his wife Christine of Rutland; three sisters, Katherine Westerlind of Worcester, Martha Westerlind of Boylston and Jane Westerlind of Paxton; many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Rita (Kane) Westerlind, his sister, Mary Rita and his sister-in-law, Tia.
John was a graduate of North High School and earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in guidance, both from Worcester State College. He was a lifelong educator, counselor and administrator. His career started at Rice Square Elementary School in Worcester. In 1972, he began a 32-year career as an administrator with the Wachusett Regional School District, working at seven elementary schools: Butterick, Chocksett and Houghton schools in Sterling, and Chaffins, Dawson, Jefferson, and Davis Hill schools in Holden. He was a dedicated leader who valued his relationship with his students and faculty.
He was an active member and Eucharistic Minister at St. George Church. John enjoyed cooking and entertaining with his family and friends. He and Betty traveled to many parts of the world, but always returned to the beaches of Maine. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, January 30th, at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The funeral will be held on Monday, January 31st, from the funeral home with a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. George Church, 38 Brattle Street, Worcester. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, 32 Church Street, West Boylston. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Heifer International, 216 Wachusett Street, Rutland, MA 01543.
