HOLDEN – Dorothy I. (Kendrick) Miles Riley, 87, died peacefully Saturday, September 25, 2004 in Bloomington, Maryland.
Her husband, Leroy Riley, died November 21, 2003. She leaves two step-daughters, Marci A. Capone and her husband John of Oakham and Leah K. Freedman of Worcester; five step-grandchildren, Katrina C. Stoll of Black Mountain, NC, Brieana and Jonna Capone both of Oakham, Dov A. Freedman of Shrewsbury, Delilah, Dahci and Desirae Freedman all of Worcester; and five step-great grandchildren. Her first husband, Adin F. Miles, died in 1963. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Leon R. and Lula J. (Wheeler) Kendrick, and lived most of her life in Holden until recently moving to Bloomington, Maryland. Her stepmother, Olga E. (Anderson) Kendrick, and her brother, Leon Kendrick, predeceased her.
Mrs. Miles Riley and her first husband, Adin, owned and operated their family funeral business, Miles Funeral Home in Holden, from the early 1940’s until her retirement in 1992. She graduated from the former Holden High School in 1935, and the New England Institute of Funeral Service in Boston. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Jefferson, Holden Historical Society, Holden Women’s Club, Selected Independent Funeral Homes, Massachusetts Funeral Director’s Association, and the National Funeral Director’s Association.
The funeral for Mrs. Miles Riley will be held on Thursday, September 30, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Burial will follow in Grove Cemetery, 1290 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, September 29, in the funeral home.
