Dorothy I. (Finn) Salls

RUTLAND – Dorothy I. (Finn) Salls, 94, of Kenwood Drive, passed peacefully on Sunday, November 20, 2011, under the loving care of her family and the staff at Knollwood Nursing Center in Worcester. She was born in Boston, the daughter of Irish immigrants, John J. and Josephine D. (Killelea) Finn and was raised in the town of Dana, which is now part of the Quabbin Reservoir, before moving to Rutland in 1938.

Her husband of 36 years, Emerson M. Salls died in 1982. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her son, Richard E. Salls and his wife Donna of Rutland; her daughter, Roberta D. Czaja and her husband Louis of Rutland; four grandchildren, John R. Lufkin and his wife Karen of Rutland, Patricia R. Kapusta and her husband Mark of Sutton, Johannah Salls Contis and her fiancé Kevin Delaurie of Rutland and Daniel L. Czaja of Worcester; six great-grandchildren, Elijah and Abigail Contis, Zachary and Carter Kapusta, Sydney I. and Jack Henry Lufkin; many nephews and nieces. Three brothers, Dana E. Finn, Dr. John J. Finn, Jr., and Dr. Ronald E. Finn, and two sisters, Josephine E. Stone and Mary E. Thompson, all predeceased her.

Mrs. Salls graduated with honors from Petersham High School in 1935, and immediately went to work in the office at Charles G. Allen Co. in Barre. After spending 20 years raising her family in Rutland, she returned to work at the age of 53 and resumed the same position that she previously held at Charles G. Allen Co., retiring in 1983. In her spare time, she assisted her brother, Dr. John J. Finn, Jr. with medical transcription.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, the Rutland Grange and the Swift River Valley Historical Society. She was a wonderful cook and homemaker, and cherished spending time with her family and gardening at her home.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial honoring Mrs. Salls’ life will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 23, at St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Burial will follow at Rural Cemetery, Rutland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Knollwood Nursing Center, Activities Fund, 87 Briarwood Circle, Worcester, MA 01606.
