HOLDEN – Dorothy A. (Anderson) Holton, 96, of Holden, died peacefully Sunday, August 10, 2014 under the loving care of her family and the staff at UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester. Born and raised in Holden, Dorothy was the daughter of Swedish immigrants, John and Sophia (Nilsson) Anderson, and lived 17 years in East Longmeadow and 13 years in Hingham before returning to Holden in 1983.
Her beloved husband of 63 years, Lucius “Pop” H. Holton died in 2003. She is survived by her two sons, L. William Holton and his wife, Lynne of Ipswich and Stephen P. Holton and his wife, Joanne and Joanne’s son, Patrick Sisk of Acton. She was predeceased her two brothers, Henry S. and Thure Anderson.
Dorothy graduated from Holden High School in 1936 and later from Becker Business School. She worked as a secretary of the former welfare board in Holden, Milton Benson Clothing Store in Holden and J.C. Tarbell Co. in East Longmeadow. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Holden and its Women’s Circle. Dorothy was a longtime volunteer at the Holden Senior Center and was a former board member of both the Holden Council on Aging and Friends of the Council on Aging. She also participated at the senior center with Meals on Wheels and Pen Pal programs and in 2007 received the council’s “Life Time Achievement Award.” She was also a member of the former Wachusett Order of Eastern Star.
Dorothy (Dot) was a gracious lady who was always concerned for the welfare of others and will be fondly remembered for her confident presence and kind nature. She will be lovingly missed by her many friends at the Holden Senior Center.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A funeral service honoring Dorothy’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 346 Shrewsbury Street, Holden. The Rev. Daniel Wilfrid will be officiating. Interment will follow at Grove Cemetery, Main Street, Holden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 346 Shrewsbury Street, Holden, MA 01520 or Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, 200 Westborough Road, North Grafton, MA 01536.
