Doris Light, aged 104, died peacefully on November 22nd in loving care at Newbridge on the Charles in Dedham. She is the wife of the late Edward J. Light. She leaves her children, Paul Light & his wife Susan Hargrave of Arlington, and Ellen Light of Newton, her grandchildren, Aliza Ray, Eric Ray, grandson-in-law Fred Denton, and her brother, Neil Glazer and sister-in-law Susan Glazer.
Doris was born and raised in Worcester, MA. She graduated from University of Rochester and Worcester State Teachers College. She served as president of the Temple Emanuel Sisterhood before pursuing a teaching career in the Worcester Public Schools while raising her family. She happily taught fifth graders at Elizabeth Street School and Thorndyke Road School, always championing the needs of all her students. Doris enjoyed family summers at Crane Beach in Ipswich, where she eventually owned a second home. In retirement, she filled her days with bridge at the Cavendish Club, volunteering as a docent at the Worcester Art Museum, and volunteer work for Rachel's Table.
Doris was curious about a wide range of subjects - music, art, history, politics, and literature. She was as interested in reading a Jack Kerouac book as she was in listening to a Mahler symphony. This made her a very interesting conversationalist. She was intellectually bright, spirited, and passionate in her opinions, which may have earned her a reputation of being forceful. Her inner strength helped steer her through the challenges that life offered and may have contributed to her longevity. Family was all-important to her. Doris was undoubtedly a woman of valor and a guidepost for those of us who will follow her. She will be dearly remembered for a long time.
A graveside service will be held privately at B'nai Brith Cemetery in Worcester.
