Donald W. Schmidt

July 12, 1926 — November 16, 2014

PAXTON – Donald W. Schmidt, 88, of Paxton, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester after an illness. Born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, Don was son of William and Florence (Klawitter) Schmidt and lived many years in Worcester before moving to Paxton in 1957.

His wife of 62 years, Carol E. (Lloyd) Schmidt, died in 2010. He is survived by his son, David W. Schmidt of Douglas; a daughter-in-law, Kandi Schmidt of Worcester; and three grandchildren, Jody, Heidi and Katie Schmidt. A sister, Jean Simmler of Florida, predeceased him.

Don graduated from North High School in Worcester and worked in sales at Brierly Lumbard and Company in Worcester. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Ormsby in the European African Middle Eastern and Asiatic Pacific Theatres and during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Briareus. He was a founding member of the Manchaug Pond Association and a former member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Worcester. Don held nothing less than reverence for nature and the tranquility Manchaug Pond gave him. He spent summer vacations there with his family and enjoyed introducing his grandchildren to the pond as his father did for him many years ago. He will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father grandfather and friend.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Don’s family from 11 to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, followed by a funeral service honoring his life at 12:30. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery in Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manchaug Pond Foundation, P.O. Box 154, Manchaug, MA 01526.
