WEST BOYLSTON – Donald R. Thunberg, 69, of 236 Goodale Street, entered into eternal life at home surrounded by his loving wife and family. He exhibited much courage during his eight month ordeal with cancer.

He leaves his wife of 48 years, Claudette (Barriere) Thunberg; a daughter, Kathleen M. Cole and her husband Gil of Hollis, Maine; two sons, Ronald P. Thunberg and his wife Jane of West Boylston and Barry D. Thunberg and his wife Laura of Auburn; seven grandchildren, Brenton and Averi Cole, Samantha, Caitlin and Travis Thunberg and Luke and Lindsey Thunberg; two brothers, Robert G. and Darryl P. Thunberg both of Worcester; a sister, Judith A. St. Amand of Worcester; nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester, son of Ralph H. and Emma (Clarke) Thunberg, and had lived most of his life in Worcester before moving to West Boylston 11 years ago. He graduated from Classical High School in 1954 and enlisted in the Army where he served for 2 years. He received his bachelor’s degree from Fitchburg State College, a master’s degree from Worcester State College and his CAGS from the University of Connecticut.

Mr. Thunberg worked for the Auburn School System since 1961. He became Principal of the Auburn Middle School in 1988 and retired in 1997. He was a loving and devoted father and husband. His wife, children and grandchildren were the most important part of his life. Family meant everything to him along with his close friends whom he also considered his family.

The funeral Mass for Mr. Thunberg will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 111 Worcester Street (Rte. 140), West Boylston. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6 in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Contribution Services, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445-7226; or to The A.L.S.
