RUTLAND – Donald R. Johnson, 74, of Rutland, died peacefully Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at UMass Memorial - Lake Avenue, Worcester. Don was born in Ware the son of Ernest “Pop” R. and Ann (Slosek) Johnson and lived in Wheelwright and later Barre before moving to Rutland in 1969.
After attending Hardwick High School, Don enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and honorably served his country from 1958 to 1962. He worked 15 years for Romar Tissue Mill in Wheelwright, several years at Olson Manufacturing in Holden, and 19 years at Devereux School in Rutland. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Rutland.
Don’s hobbies included fishing, hunting and spending time gardening in his backyard. He loved watching NASCAR racing and was an avid fan of the Steelers, Braves, Tigers and the Bruins. His favorite pastimes were barbequing in his backyard for his family and friends, and vacationing with his family in Maine. He was once scouted by the Boston Red Sox’s for his left-handed pitching ability. He will be affectionately remembered for his handlebar mustache, great sense of humor, patriotism, and most of all for his devotion to his family.
He leaves his wife of 49 years, Edith E. (Hunting) Johnson; two sons, Matthew J. Johnson and his wife Lisa of Haverhill and Thomas E. Johnson of Rutland; a daughter, Theresa A. Johnson of Rutland; a sister, Beverly A. Depres of Wheelwright; a granddaughter, Brett Kaitlin Johnson; several nephews and nieces.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, December 29, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 30 at St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main St., Rutland. Interment with military honors will follow at Rural Cemetery in Rutland.
