HOLDEN/BRIGHTON – Donald H. Holman, 88, formerly of Holden, died at the Brighton House Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Monday, October 26, 2015. Born and raised in Norwood, Donald was the son of Edward F. and Lillian M. (Jones) Holman.
Don graduated from Norwood High School, Bryant and Stratton Commercial School, Boston University with a BS in business administration, and Boston University School of Social Work. Don helped out with the Holman family catering business throughout his younger years. He served in the army during the occupation of Japan at the end of WWII. His career started at the Springfield Fire and Marine Insurance Company in Pittsburgh, PA, continued as a family caseworker for the City Mission Society in Jamaica Plain, then as an insurance claims adjuster for Worcester Mutual Insurance Co. (Hanover).
Don married the love of his life, the late Priscilla A. Carlson, in 1958 and spent most of his married life in Holden, where he lived for over 35 years. He is survived by two sons, Scott Holman and his wife, Diane of New Fairfield, CT, and James E. Holman and his wife, Beth of Natick; a daughter, Jayne E. Stevenson and her husband, John of North Reading; five grandchildren, Miles and Brendan Holman, Ellie and Kate Holman, and Zoe Stevenson; and nieces and nephews.
Don was a member of the First Congregational Church of Holden and the Greendale Retired Men’s Club. When he retired, he became an active volunteer with the Wachusett Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels, the Heifer Project, the Worcester Ecotarium, and an elementary reading program. From 1993 to 1994, he delighted Holden residents with a frequent column in Wachusett People, a local newspaper. He also was one of the founding members of the committee to save the Red Barn.
Don’s upbeat and outgoing personality and his ability to see the good in every person made him a beloved figure in Holden.
A Memorial Service honoring and celebrating Don’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 21, at the First Congregational Church of Holden. Burial will be private in Highland Cemetery, Norwood.
