WORCESTER – Donald M. Henderson, 87, of Worcester, died on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at UMass Memorial Healthcare, University Campus, Worcester. Born and raised in Holden, Don was the son of James and Leora F. (Clapp) Henderson and lived 20 years in Princeton before moving to Worcester in 1977.
In 1943, at the age of 17, Don enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and served as a radioman in both the Asiatic and Pacific Theatres aboard the USS Fitch DD462 and the YMS - 1 class minesweeper. He continued serving his country during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Hollis, a Buckley class destroyer. On May 9, 1953, Don married the love of his life, Marilyn Spillane and moved to Princeton where they raised their family.
Don was an inspector at Norton Co. where he worked for over 20 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons in Rutland. He loved all sports and fervently followed New England sports teams with his sons. He also enjoyed the times spent camping with his family particularly in New Hampshire and Maine.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Marilyn M. (Spillane) Henderson; two sons, William Henderson and his wife Cynthia of Hubbardston and Paul D. Henderson and his wife Cindy of Holden; a brother, Richard Henderson of Germantown, Maryland; two grandchildren, Joshua P. Henderson and his wife Jennifer and Emily Rose Henderson; and many nephews and nieces. Besides his parents, Don is predeceased by three brothers, William, James and Robert Henderson, and two sisters, Margery Davis and Shirlie DeFalco.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, September 16, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A funeral service honoring Don’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow with military honors at Grove Cemetery, Holden.
