Donald A Dorward

December 19, 1928 — January 3, 2023

Donald Arthur Dorward, 94, of Charlton MA, beloved husband of Betty Ann for 69 years, passed away on January 3, 2023, at the Overlook Masonic Home. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Don was born on December 19, 1928, to the late Arthur Rex Dorward and Louise Butterfield Dorward. Don grew up in Worcester MA and subsequently lived in Holden and North Brookfield. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Lou Erdman. He was a loving father to his children Tom Dorward and his wife Lisa, and Patti Barney and her husband Chris. He dearly loved his grandchildren Charise, Victoria, Paul, Douglas, Bryan, Nichole, Mart (Trey), and David as well as his great-grandchildren Raelynn, Rhett, Auryn, Annabelle, Steven and Ruby.

Don attended Classical High School in Worcester as well as the University of Vermont and Worcester Junior College where he earned an Associate's Degree in Business. Don was a Staff Sergeant while serving as an instruments instructor in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954.

Don joined the Fuller Regalia and Flag Company family business along with his father and grandfather in 1954, eventually becoming the owner and president. He sold the business in 1985 when it was 100 years old.

Don was a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Worcester and he was a Paul Harris Fellow in 1980. He was a member of the Masons at the Rufus Putnam Lodge in Rutland MA for 64 years. He was also a member of the Grange in Holden for over 60 years. Don was a member of the First Congregational Churches in Holden, North Brookfield, and Sarasota, Florida.

Don's hobbies included antique cars, furniture refinishing, gardening, dancing, shuffleboard, reading, swimming, and sailing. Don loved country western dancing with Betty and he taught line dance lessons for several years. Don loved serving others and could be found washing the neighbor's car or helping with community projects. He had a great sense of humor and he could be a prankster too. He was known for his honesty and integrity. Above all he was totally committed to his wife Betty and he loved her fiercely.

Don and Betty were blessed to spend many years at Brooks Pond in North Brookfield where they experienced "a piece of heaven on earth". They frequently enjoyed sharing their piece of heaven with family and friends.

A Memorial Service for Don will be held in the future at the discretion of Don's family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rufus Putnam Lodge at 293 Main St. Rutland, MA 01543, or a charity of your choice.
