RUTLAND – Donald R. D’Auteuil, 69, a local businessman, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester.
He leaves his loving wife of 47 years, Phyllis O. (Hall) D’Auteuil; two daughters, Tabitha M. Merchant and her husband Rick and Dawn M. Jensen and her husband Erik all of Rutland; a brother, Robert D’Auteuil of Deerfield; a sister, Eileen Robbins of Bradenton, FL; five grandchildren, Joshua, Jessica and Joseph Merchant and Alexander and Benjamin Jensen; and several nephews and nieces.
Donald was born in Lawrence, the son of Leandre and Carmelia (Guilmette) D’Auteuil and had lived in Rutland for 45 years. He graduated from Lawrence High School and enlisted in the Air Force in 1964. He was a sergeant serving with the 467th Combat SPT Group in the Philippines during the Vietnam Era. After serving his country, Donald owned and operated Rutland Variety with his wife Phyllis. They later owned and operated Rutland Glass Company for 27 years before retiring in 2006. After retiring, Don enjoyed working part-time at the Dunroamin Country Club in Gilbertville.
Donald was active in town politics and served on several committees and boards over the years in the Town of Rutland. He served on the Board of Selectmen for two terms, the Finance Committee and he was a member of the Development & Industrial Commission. Donald was one of the original EMT’s on the Rutland Fire Dept. and worked on the Wachusett Watershed Regional Recycling Center project. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, and was a member and past commander of the Rutland American Legion Post 310. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting with family and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Funeral services for Mr. D’Auteuil will be held on Monday, May 6, from the funeral home with a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main Street, Rutland. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
