Demitrios 'Jimmy' G. Pantos

November 22, 1928 — December 2, 2012

WORCESTER — Demitrios G. Pantos died with his loving family by his side on December 2, 2012. He was 84. Demitrios was married to his beloved wife Mary Chioutsis Pantos for 50 years prior to her death in 2006. He leaves his devoted daughter Valerie James, and her two children whom he helped raise Christos James, and Joanna James Moschos, who is married to Charles William Moschos. He also leaves a son George D. Pantos, and four grandchildren.

Demitrios G. Pantos was most fondly known as Jimmy. He was born on Nov. 22, 1928, in Epirus, the northwestern region of Greece from a small village called Vavouri. He is predeceased by his mother Kaliope Stathis, and father Gregoris Pantos. Gregoris first came to the U.S. in 1906 enlisting in the American military serving in World War I.

Jimmy fulfilled his army requirements in Greece where he was stationed as one of the head chefs in Thessaloniki cooking for lieutenants and generals. Jimmy later immigrated to the U.S. in December 1954 moving to Worcester, which became his lifelong city. He survived his two brothers Prokopios and Gregoris both of Worcester. His eldest sister Vasiliki Pantos Natsis died in Athens, 1997.

He began working in the restaurant industry, eventually opening his own diner on Chandler Street in the 1960’s called the West Side Diner. He opened and sold four pizzerias in Norton, Sharon, Foxborough and Mansfield, and became a successful restaurateur of a full dining establishment in Mansfield called Jimmy’s Pub in 1979.

Other than Jimmy’s culinary talent, it was his well-known warmth and friendliness that won the hearts of patrons, friends and family alike. Although Jimmy was retired he was considered the “ambassador of Val’s Restaurant,” his daughter’s restaurant in Holden, where he most enjoyed going daily to welcome guests and sit to share meals with customers. He loved spending time with his family, including many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jimmy was a long-standing member of the Masonic Lodge, the Elks Club, Ahepa and St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He took great pride to cast an absentee ballot this presidential election while he was hospitalized, as to continue his civic duty. His pastimes included backgammon, gardening, and he was an avid Red Sox fan.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 4, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 5, at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell St., Worcester. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the memory of Demitrios G. Pantos to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St. New York, NY 10016, or www.kidney.org .
