HOLDEN – Darren T. Kelley, 30, of 425 Causeway Street in the Jefferson section of Holden, died Friday, November 17, 2006, as the result of a diving accident in Teneto Village, Rota Island, in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
He is survived by his mother and father, Lea Anne (Scales) and Timothy Kelley; his sister and brother, Lynn Kelley and Brian Kelley of Jefferson; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and a close friend and mentor, Lynne Michael of Rota. Darren was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Albert and Phyllis (Anderson) Scales of Rutland, and his paternal grandparents, James and Beatrice (Kelley) Kelley of Worcester.
Darren was a high school math teacher and computer-networking specialist at Rota High School on Rota Island, located 40 miles north of Guam. He was born in Worcester and raised in Shrewsbury. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts Lowell with a Computer Science degree, and worked for 3COM Systems of Marlboro and Conexant Inc. of Westboro. Darren spent all his spare time studying to pursue an advanced degree in mathematics, playing his guitar, and his newfound interest in scuba diving and spear fishing. He enjoyed motorcycling and amassing a large collection of movies. Darren is remembered for his infectious smile, his great sense of humor and adventurous spirit. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
The funeral service for Darren will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 27, in the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery, 142 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, November 26, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations in Darren’s name may be made to the Gale Free Library, 23 Highland Street, Holden, MA 01520; or the First Congregational Church of Rutland, P.O. Box 484, Rutland, MA 01543.
